Introduction

Effective collaboration tools are an important component of the GAC’s operations.  GAC members and observing organizations interact over a number of different platforms.  This web page explains the various tools and how you can become familiar with them.

  1. Remote Participation

        Intersessional Telephone Calls

Between the ICANN meetings, GAC members collaborate using the “Zoom” tool as remote participation platform. Zoom provides audio, video, chat and document sharing capabilities for users. ICANN org launched this web conference platform in 2018 to increase security and privacy for ICANN participants. To learn specifics about the platform, how to use it and for a list of “frequently asked” user questions (FAQs), please scroll down  to the ‘’Documentation’’ section on this web page.

Zoom works globally! But as with any communications tool, there are accessibility challenges in some regions. Please read this article detailing potential accessibility issues for Zoom around the world. If it looks like you might be negatively affected by any access restrictions, please advise GAC Support staff at gac-staff@icann.org for assistance.

It’s easy to join a Zoom meeting.  Please watch this quick video on how to join a meeting to better understand how to mute/unmute, control your camera and more.

        In-person GAC Meetings

In-person meetings provide valuable face-to-face discussions and networking opportunities for participants representing GAC Members and Observer organizations. Nearly all GAC in-person meetings take place during or in conjunction with an ICANN Public Meeting. At a typical GAC in-person meeting only about 40% of GAC participants can attend in person.  As a result, remote participation capabilities are important to keep all GAC participants informed about what happens at a meeting.  Recording and transcripts of in-person meetings are collected and maintained on the ICANN Meetings Calendar & Archives Page and here on the GAC web site’s Meetings & Records Page.

  1. Document Collaboration

        Google Tools

In addition to telephone discussions, many GAC collaborative drafting efforts are still conducted by email. More and more committee participants are utilizing collaborative drafting tools like Google docs that enable working group members to work at their own pace and contribute to joint documents.

  1. Working Group Collaboration

GAC Working Groups provide a collaborative atmosphere for GAC participants to work collectively on ICANN policies, topics and issues of importance to governments.  Each GAC working group develops proactive work plans to address topics and issues that have long-term implications that would benefit from government attention and input.

The work of the GAC is currently supported by several formal working groups including:

If you are interested in contributing to the work of any of the current working groups and are not yet signed-up, please reach out to gac-staff@icann.org.
