Session Details:

Hosted by ICANN’s Contractual Compliance and Consumer Safeguards team, the webinar will also include representatives from ICANN’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer and the Global Domains Division.

Over the past few years there has been an increase in reports of DNS abuse, including malware, phishing and botnets. We have also seen the advent of voluntary agreements between registries and content producers aimed at reducing massive online copyright infringement. In light of these developments, we are initiating a community-wide discussion of contractual compliance and consumer safeguards, including ICANN’s authority and capabilities to address DNS abuse.

Please join us for an initial community discussion on contractual compliance and consumer safeguard matters on 25 September 2017. We developed a flexible agenda based on input gathered from the community to facilitate an informal discussion around:

  • Existing safeguards [PDF, 316 KB] within ICANN’s contracts and Bylaws
  • Types of DNS abuse that may fall within ICANN’s remit; and
  • Gaps within ICANN’s capabilities to address abuse that may be filled by other entities within the community

This webinar will allow for an open discussion on these topics as well as any other related issues raised by members of the community:

  • Review and discuss existing safeguards within ICANN’s contracts and By-laws.
  • Identify types of DNS abuse that may fall within ICANN’s remit.
  • Discuss voluntary efforts to address abuse within the DNS.
  • Consider possible topic(s) for discussion during a session at ICANN 60.

If you cannot join the webinar and would like to share your thoughts, or if you have any questions, please contact ICANN’s Consumer Safeguards Director, Bryan Schilling, at bryan.schilling@icann.org.
