About the GAC

The Internet is a global phenomenon and opens huge opportunities for all countries' economies and citizens.

The GAC seeks to incorporate the diverse views, laws and policies of many different countries, distinct economies and international organisations in its advice to ICANN.

Participation in the GAC allows members to influence policies concerning the management of the Domain Name System (DNS) and related functions, which are important to the overall operation of the Internet.

Because the GAC brings together diverse knowledge and expertise, GAC members have also realised significant benefits from participating in the Committee.

What is the GAC?

The Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) of ICANN is an Advisory Committee comprising representatives of national governments, multinational governmental organisations and treaty organisations, and distinct economies as recognised in international fora.

The Governmental Advisory Committee considers and provides advice on the activities of ICANN as they relate to concerns of governments, particularly matters where there may be an interaction between ICANN's policies and laws and international agreements or where they may affect public policy issues.

The GAC is a forum for the discussion of government interests and concerns, including consumer interests. It is an advisory committee, and as such has no legal authority to act for ICANN, but will report its findings and recommendations to the ICANN Board. GAC advice to ICANN is published on this website.
